Design agency Edenspiekermann (cc @espiekermann) has strikingly simple statements of value. Any agency would do well to ask themselves: What’s holding us back from speaking so candidly about what we do, why we do it, and how we should be treated. Why aren’t agencies always this candid about where they will be of value, and where they won’t? Because they are afraid: afraid of becoming irrelevant maybe, or afraid of offending potential clients. Edenspiekermann is a newish firm, but they speak with the maturity of principals who have been in business for decades. Four decades.

Data Lives! Cinemetrics are a visual fingerprint of movies.

“Cinemetrics is about measuring and visualizing movie data, in order to reveal the characteristics of films and to create a visual “fingerprint” for them. Information such as the editing structure, color, speech or motion are extracted, analyzed and transformed into graphic representations so that movies can be seen as a whole and easily interpreted or compared side by side.” – Flowingdata.com

“Anything that won’t sell, I don’t want to invent. Its sale is proof of utility, and utility is success.”

– Thomas Edison

Edison understood this basic relationship of invention to utility and utility to human need.

Font 005

In 2006 I art directed issues 004 and 005 of FontShop’s magazine, Font. I had forgotten how much fun it was to be given so much free reign in a publication. And I’m delighted to find a full PDF for download.
